What "Back to Basic" really means

ON:GI Team · April 2026 · 3 min read
온기

Every bar we make carries a small stamp pressed into the top: Back to Basic. It's compact — three words, two lines, barely visible until you hold it at an angle in the light. We didn't put it there as branding. We put it there as a reminder. A promise we make to ourselves every time a bar ships.

Basic doesn't mean simple in a lazy way. It means deliberate. It means we went through every possible ingredient and asked: does this need to be here? Not "could this be here" or "would this hurt anything" — but does it actually need to be here, for the person whose skin is going to meet this bar every day?

"The absence of things matters as much as the presence. Sometimes more."

The EWG Skin Deep database scores ingredients from 0 to 10 — 0 and 1 meaning the lowest hazard concern, the most thoroughly studied, the least likely to cause harm. Every ingredient in every ON:GI bar scores 0 or 1. That's the floor. It's non-negotiable.

But the standard alone doesn't define us. What defines us is what we chose to leave out:

What you won't find in any ON:GI bar

We also made a decision about packaging that's easy to overlook: no plastic. Every bar arrives wrapped in Korean hanji paper — a traditional handmade paper that biodegrades completely. We didn't do this because it photographs well. We did it because if we're asking you to care about what goes on your skin, we should care about what's left behind.

Back to Basic is stamped into the bar because we want you to feel it under your thumb before you use it. A small, physical reminder that someone thought carefully about what they were handing you. That thought is the product.
